10 DIY Carpet Cleaning Secrets and Tips

  • Regular carpet cleaning not only means cleaner carpets but can also contribute to a healthier home environment.
  • The Norwark virus or Norovirus (the viruses that causes the stomach flu) can survive on an uncleaned carpet for a month or more.
  • Carpet cleaning – Eliminates trapped pollutants.
    • Can clear out dust mite infestations
    • Can help prevent mold growth
    • Remove the furniture from the carpeted area before cleaning
    • If the furniture is too heavy, place a plastic film under and around the legs of the furniture
    • Wait until the carpet dries before replacing the furniture or walking on the carpet
    • Vacuum thoroughly
    • Carpets need to be vacuumed once a week and more often in areas that are prone to dirt
    • This can have the biggest impact on the whole process! Follow the instructions on the machine carefully
    • Always remember to test any cleaning products on a small area first
    • Do not add other chemicals or under-dilute in an attempt to make your cleaner stronger
    • Only use a Seal of Approval cleaning solution that works with your extractor
    • Do not use excessive amount of detergents for carpet cleaning
    • Begin at the farthest point from the doorway and work back toward it so you can step out when done

    • If you have a very high quality carpet, call in a professional carpet cleaner every 2 – 3 years for a really thorough job
    • Properly train pets
    • Make sure your cat, dog, or other small animal does not have any “accidents” on your carpet
